The most important property that metal must have to be produced into wires is ductility. Materials or alloys that are ductile have the ability to be drawn into wires. Although high ductility is an important characteristic, there are certain other features that require presence in order to classify a wire as successful in applications. For instance, Nichrome 80/20 Wire , which consists primarily of nickel is referred to as a resistance alloy. The resistivity of this alloy is much higher in comparison to a conventional wire. Hence, the 80-20 Nickel Chromium Resistance Wire is considered to be an ideal material for electrical heating. The alloy is useful even if it has been heated to a temperature range as high as 2150℉. At such high temperatures, the 80/20 Nickel Wire has often demonstrated useability due to its high strength. The inclusion of chromium in the alloy as a secondary alloyant offers the added benefit of resistance to oxidation corrosion. The significant content of chromium in Nichrome Wires reacts with oxygen to form a layer of chromium oxide. The newly formed oxide layer prevents the penetration of air such that it cannot reach the inner layer of the metal, thereby effectively hindering oxidation corrosion. The oxidation resistance of the 80 20 Nickel Chrome Wire is noted despite exposure to high temperatures, which in some cases could cause rapid degeneration by means of oxidation.
