General engineering steels such as C45 possess moderate tensile strength. A medium carbon steel alloy, the C45 Round Bar is hardened by using heat treatments such as quenching and tempering. It is also possible to harden the alloy by either induction hardening or flame hardening. In a normalized or black hot rolled condition, the Carbon Steel C45 Round Bars would have a tensile strength that ranges 570 Mpa – 700 Mpa. While its Brinell hardness in either condition would typically range between 170 – 210. As the alloy is unalloyed, due to it being medium carbon steel, the price of the Aisi 1045 Carbon Steel Rod would be on the economical side of the price range. However, the lack of elements in its chemical composition gives the alloy zero to very few corrosion resistance properties. So in conditions where nitriding atmospheres are prevalent, the EN 1.0503 C45 Square Bar will not deliver a satisfactory performance. But this alloy makes up for its shortcomings by being very useful for general engineering applications. Meaning, the ability of the C45 Steel Round Bar to withstand high pressure, coupled with the fact that the alloy can carry heavy loads makes it suited to general engineering.
